Antique Cobalt Blue Garden Stool
Item No. 16779

19th Century, N/A, China
18" x 0" x 0"
( 45.72 x 0 x 0 cm)
(H x W x D)

This octagonal garden stool, a modified form of a drum, was made for placement in the garden of a wealthy family, as cobalt, a highly prized mineral, was normally used only for the most precious of objects. The stool is decorated on its sides with pierce work and with calligraphy in high relief in two panels, a pair of dragons chasing the flaming pearl, a censor on top of a bat and a vase on the remaining panels, while on the seat is a pierced design of a coin. All these are propitious symbols meant to imbue good fortune into the body of those who were fortunate enough to be able to sit on them
