This lamp is made with an apple green glazed stoneware architecural tile which was originally used, especially in Southern Chinese houses and buildings, as an architecural insert to create a flow of air through the building's interior during the summer season. It is believed that by using elements to promote air flow, a building's "chi" or natural energy would be restored and maintained.
This square tile with indented corners is pregnant with symbolic meaning. The center contains four lotus petals with several lotus seeds which are symbols of fertility which means "may you have many sons." There is a bat (fu in Chinese) at each corner which is a homonym for good fortune (also fu in Chinese)and symbolizes good luck, happiness, longevity and wealth. Two sets of four bats are created in the negative space in the piece, one set next to the bats in the molds and an other set next to the leaves of the lotus.
The tile is mounted on a lucite base.
