Carved Kneeling Monk

Early 20th Century, Buddhist, Burma
Wood with Pigmentation
9" x 4.75" x 6"
( 22.86 x 12.065 x 15.24 cm)

This charming image represents an acolyte, a young monk whose hands, now missing, would originally have been placed in front of his chest, palms pressing each other in the position of wai, that of honor and respect, and kneeling with his feet bent under him. He wears the traditional robes of a Theravada Buddhist monk, with the right shoulder bare and the left covered by the tail of the garment draped over his left shoulder. He has a delicately and finely carved face with painted soft features set in a serene smile. There are losses to the base and arms.
