Bodhsiattva in Meditation
Item No. 19017

19th Century, Buddhist, China
Lacquer over Wood with Polychrome and Gilt
7" x 4.5" x 3"
( 17.78 x 11.43 x 7.62 cm)
(H x W x D)

This Bodhisattva from South China is seated in meditation with right hand on top of left and legs in padmasana with soles of both feet exposed. The Bodhisattva wears an eight lobed crown in two parts: the front has five lobes with cross hatched design and a raised carved seven petaled flower in the center, the rear part three undecorated lobes. The crown was probably added later to the piece. The surface of the statue was originally painted red and black and then gilded. There was also a layer of thick and dark lacquer applied over the gilt, especially to seal the bung which is still closed. The statue has lost most of its surface although small amounts of red and black paint, the gilding and the lacquer are extant throughout the statue.
