Guanyin in Meditation
Item No. 19033

18th - 19th Century, Buddhist, China
Lacquer over Wood and Polychrome
13" x 6" x 5"
( 33.02 x 15.24 x 12.7 cm)
(H x W x D)

This slender image seems to be of a male Guanyin sitting in meditation on a backless throne. The throne is set on a rockery which is emphasized with a uniformly smoothe and bright red lacquer which is in contrast to the gilt and opaque lacquered areas of the Bodhisattva’s robes. He sits in meditation with the hands flat and in the lap and his legs crossed in padmasana, although they are covered by his flowing robes. His serene oval face with half-closed eyes cast down is topped by a four lobed pointed crown centered by the Buddha Amitabha. Considerable gilt and polychrome remain on the well preserved image, which has a closed and sealed bung on the back.
