18th Century, Buddhist, China
Lacquer over Wood and Polychrome
14.5" x 7.5" x 4"
( 36.83 x 19.05 x 10.16 cm)

Guanyin sits with her legs covered by her robe in padmasana with both hands in her lap in dhyanasana mudra. Her serene face is set in a contemplative expression with heavily lidded eyes, prominent nose and bud mouth. Her five lobed crown is centered with a faded image of Buddha Amitabha set in a triangle which once was bordered with flames of Buddhism. Double plaited braids extend down her shoulders behind her elongated curved earlobes. She wears a pleated undergarment tied under her chest with a ribbon. Her outer garment with long sleeves flows over her backless throne. Two strands of beads hangs around her neck. Her throne rests atop a small open lotus framed by two diagonal lotuses. Just a few traces of the original red pigment remain. The back contains a sealed cavity which was filled with sutras and messages to ancestors which were placed inside when the piece was consecrated.
