Guanyin in Meditation

18th - 19th Century, Buddhist, China
Wood with Pigmentation
11" x 5" x 4"
( 27.94 x 12.7 x 10.16 cm)

Guanyin sits in padmasana, her robes covering her legs, her hands in her lap in meditation. Her head is titled slightly forward in contemplation with heavy lidded eyes cast down from her full oval face with finely carved features. Her crown is centered with a carving of the Buddha Amitabha framed by flames of Buddhism. She has a chignon and the hair framing her face falls into a loop over each elongated ear and in single plaited tendrils which extend down her shoulders. Her undergarment is atypical, it is crossed high near the neck and has a simple tie at the waist. Some of the original carved geometric decoration is still visible on her skirt. She sits on a backless throne set on a lotus and two lotus buds atop a rocky base. Some of the original gold and silver leaf which covered the image remain.
