Carving of a High Official
Item No. 16024

19th Century, Taoist / Popular Religions, China
32" x 12" x 9"
( 81.28 x 30.48 x 22.86 cm)
(H x W x D)

This extremely dignified official sits on a backless chair in the traditional official’s pose with his left hand resting on his knee and his right held aloft. He wears a modest hat and his robe, fasted at the collar, is devoid of any embellishments except for the decorative apron between his legs which has carved florals and tassels at the hem. His well modeled face and hands are extremely well defined: the carved arched eyebrows rise over his bold rimmed eyes and his distinctive mouth has a slight hint of a smile. His long slender finders end in finely carved finger nails. The single piece of hardwood from which he is carved has a warm patina from age.
