This magnificent and pensive Guanyin sits in meditation position (dhyanasana mudra) with her elegant hands with slender fingers held in her lap. Although carved on a massive scale, her sensitively carved features impart a sense of gracefulness and delicacy. Her finely carved hair frames her face, drapes in elegant loops around her pendulous ears and flows down each of her shoulders in three plaits. Her crown is centered with an image of the Buddha Amitabha seated on a lotus and set in a ground of florals interspersed with cloud forms. Her cobalt shawl flow down her shoulders, opens at the front to reveal her pale green undergarment which is tied at the waist with a ribbon and extends at her sides to drape over her seat. At her chest is a green necklace. Although her face has been repainted, this is an extremely sensitively carved and beautiful piece.
