18th - 19th Century, Buddhist, China
Wood with Pigmentation
17" x 6" x 5"
( 43.18 x 15.24 x 12.7 cm)
(H x W x D)

This head of a Bodhisattva might have part of a large puppet, as it is self contained and not a segment of a continuous larger statue. The Bodhisattva is full faced with open almond shaped eyes below full lids, a small smiling mouth about a small inset chin and pendulous ears. She wear a tall and elaborated carved pierced tiara two dragons facing inward to a flaming pearl with their incised bodies coiling arched upwards to form the inside border of the tiara and sideways to form the lower border of the tiara. Considerable red, gold and green pigmentation remains.
