Blue and White Underglaze Oil Lamp

This tall underglaze blue and white oil lamp contains a shaft placed on a large circular rimed base. The base is decorated with four chrysanthemums interspersed with oblong strings of bindweed on the bottom and circular wave designs lining the rim. . The shaft is designed with plantains, bindweeds and circular motifs. Bindweed design was commonly used in for both domestic Chinese wares and for export ware to Southeast Asia in the later part of the 19th century. The top element that holds the candle also has plantains and three wans (reversed swastikas) symbolizing the coming together of yin and yang (male and female) elements necessary for the creation of energy and fire, appropriate symbols for placement on top of a candlestick.
