Rare Carved Seated Small Figure of a Foreigner
Item No. 16857

19th Century, N/A, China
Lacquer over Wood and Polychrome
5.25" x 3" x 2"
( 13.335 x 7.62 x 5.08 cm)
(H x W x D)

This rare, small and finely carved image represents a foreigner, as he is dressed in clothing uncharacteristic of Chinese attire. His broad hat with a wide band, scarf tied around his neck, buttoned sleeved garment and high boots are meant to denote a Westerner, as are his facial features. He sits, shoulders hunched, arms and hands firmly planted on his bent knees on a thin rectangular plinth. He is covered with gilt pigmentation over burnished red lacquer. The piece is a charming character study.
