Image of a Seated Bodhisattva
Item No. 16745

19th Century, Buddhist, China
Lacquer over Wood with Polychrome and Gilt
9" x 5.5" x 3.5"
( 22.86 x 13.97 x 8.89 cm)
(H x W x D)

The Bodhisattva from South China sits on simple double waisted red pedestal which is in in contrast to the gilt of his robes, face and body, even though the gilt is covered with lacquer. This red is repeated in the unusually shaped, high and round black hat which is characterized by vertical unadorned lobes bordered in red with a red horizontal band at the forehead. He sits in dhyana mudra in meditation with his hands in his lap and his feet in padmasana with the bare soles facing upward. His oval face is framed by pendulous ears and has a prominent and wide nose, wide arching eyebrows, downcast half-closed eyes and well rounded cheeks.

Although there is an age-crack from the hands to the base, this is an unusual and finely made piece that expresses well the calm and spirituality of the Bodhisattva.
