Buddhist Attendant Holding Sutras
Item No. 16424

18th Century, Buddhist, China
Wood with Gilt
15.5" x 5.5" x 3.75"
( 39.37 x 13.97 x 9.525 cm)
(H x W x D)

This finely carved attendant stand squarely holding with his left hand an offering tied with a sash, possibly a bundle of sutras. He leans slightly to his right indicating that he was probably placed on the left side of a statue of a figure to whom he was paying homage and probably had a counterpart attendant on the right of the statue. His face, with traces of gilt has eyes cast down in respect. He is garbed in a three layer robe belted at the waist with decorative flaring fabric from the elbows. He stands on a high pedestal base.
