Antique Scholar's Box

19th Century, N/A, China
Lacquer over Wood
14.5" x 13.75" x 11"
( 36.83 x 34.925 x 27.94 cm)

This nine drawer antique scholarís box features two-tone drawers in contrasting colors that are very striking. On each drawer are the original teardrop shaped metal pulls used to open the drawers. Such a box would have held scholarís tools such as ink cakes or sticks, brushes, an ink stone in the large drawer on the bottom, carved signature seals, ink bottles, small sheets of paper and/or other ink making or writing materials. Boxes such as this one are now relatively rare, as the idea of the traditional Chinese scholar was destroyed with the revolution, and there are now no examples of such a person for contemporary Chinese to emulate.
