Standing Man with a Rifle
Item No. 16743

19th Century, N/A, China
Lacquer over Wood and Polychrome
8.75" x 3" x 3.5"
( 22.225 x 7.62 x 8.89 cm)
(H x W x D)

This carving represents an official on a high rounded triangular pedestal. He appears to be in a fighting mode as he stands holding what might be a rifle, clasped with both hands in a sidewards stance, body slightly bent and poised for action. He wears official's attire: a domed official's rounded cap, high boots and an apron over his chest which hangs from his neck and is tied around his back. A large opening is carved into the back and sealed with a bung. Although most of the lacquer is in tact, much of the original polychrome has faded over time. The piece was carved in South China during the late 19th century.
