Guanyin in Meditation (Dhyana Mudra)
Item No. 16380

19th Century, Buddhist, China
14" x 7.5" x 4.5"
( 35.56 x 19.05 x 11.43 cm)
(H x W x D)

This finely carved Guanyin sits in meditation right hand over the left in her lap, covered legs in padmasana below her flowing robe. Her square face tilts down slightly as if in meditative peace, her half closed almond shaped eyes peering downward under arched eyebrows. Her hair is swept back in a bun, has loops over the ears, and extends down in single strands over her broad shoulders. Her four lobed crown is centered by a deeply carved arched lobe with a figure of the Buddha Amitabha seated in meditation on a waisted lotus throne and surrounded by vertical flames of Buddhism, now with some losses and degrading. She sits on a backless throne set upon a footed pedestal which may have been added later. The surface of the piece which was once covered with a fabric and then lacquer and pigmentation has been worn so that there are now just traces of the gilt, colored lacquer and pigmention which once decorated the image.
